3/20/2023 0 Comments True grit 2010 cast![]() Mattie (Hailee Steinfeld) has a “youthful contralto” that contrasts with the low-register voices of Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and LaBoeuf (Matt Damon). 2 Emerson further highlights language’s musicality in the Coens’ film. “The Coens go for baroque-high stylisation that’s not quite horse-operatic, but in an American vernacular that’s like Bach transposed to ‘Deadwood,’” says critic Jim Emerson. They love idiomatic and regional language. Told from Mattie’s perspective, as a 40-year-old spinster, Portis’ prose is self-conscious, and therefore a hilarious, excessively formal 19th century patois. She’s a girl with staunch puritanical beliefs in justice. Tagging along, and seeking Chaney for shooting a senator, is puffed up Texas Ranger LaBoeuf. Cogburn balks at her joining, but relents when he sees that it’s impossible to get rid of her from this manhunt. ![]() He’s presumed to have hitched up with a gang of bandits led by Lucky Ned Pepper. In the novel, set in the 1870s, 13-year-old Mattie Ross, a native of Yell County, Arkansas, hires Cogburn to fetch the coward Tom Chaney who, after shooting her father dead, fled. Rather, they went straight to the source, Portis’ 1968 novel, shooting a film faithful to the texture and feel of the source material. When making their film, the Coens didn’t even watch Hathaway’s version. That would be Henry Hathaway’s 1969 version with John Wayne playing the ornery and fat Rooster Cogburn. This isn’t the first True Grit to make it to the silver screen. In a New York Times profile, Joel said, “We didn’t think we should mess around with what we thought was a very compelling story and character.” 1 A telling remark – in Charles Portis, the Coens found an author who shares a similar sensibility for language and worldview. With True Grit, however, their approach to genre is more straightforward. The Western ( Blood Simple., No Country for Old Men), screwball comedy ( Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy, Burn After Reading), gangster films ( Miller’s Crossing), film noir ( Blood Simple, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Man Who Wasn’t There, No Country for Old Men) – you name it. ![]() In the past, the Coen brothers warped any genre that they worked in and with. They view their characters not on high, but almost eye-level this time. They dial down their condescension of and cruelty towards their characters. They leech the film of irony and nihilism. They are both hits in my book.True Grit (2010) sticks out in Joel and Ethan Coen’s body of work. Thus, this movie is a reworking of what was previously a hit but now everything looks brand new and has a different flavor. The Coen brothers brilliantly directed all of this movie, and it shows. (1) the first one shows Hailee Steinfeld, who explains how she was chosen for the coveted role of Mattie Ross (2) the costume designer, Mary Zophres, discusses all the research that she made to getting the costumes right and why she picked what she did and (3) the set designer shows us how Grainger, Texas, was chosen to portray Fort Smith, Arkansas and all of the changes that were made to make it look authentic 1870-1880s. There are 3 special features to this dvd. It was a good time to turn on the subtitles. There is a lot of dialog in this movie, and I did not want to miss any of it as much of it was subtly humorous. In the first movie, we were treated to Glen Campbell as a singer. The competition between La Boeuf and Cogburn is much more evident in this movie than in the first. Matt Damon plays La Boeuf, the Glen Campbell role of a Texas ranger, who is also looking for Chaney for an earlier murder in Texas. ![]() Rooster is much more of an unwilling hunter in this movie, and he does everything he can to keep from becoming the chaperone for Mattie. We could have never been told that in 1969.īut the real star of True Grit 2010 is the unknown child star Hailee Steinfeld, who portrays the Kim Darby role, Mattie Ross, who in this movie practically drafts Rooster to look for her daddy's killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). With 2010 morals in place, we learn that Rooster has had 2 wives and why their relationships never worked out. Jeff plays Rooster Cogburn as a much more serious U. Jeff Bridges shines in this 2010 version of the 1969 John Wayne movie that won him a long deserved Academy Award. An Excellent Retelling of a Classic Story ![]()
